This photo (via) reminds me of the time I walked the entire circumference of Spot Pond. I had to walk alongside the highway for a portion of the journey which was rather unpleasant. The area after the highway detour looked a bit like this. It’s one of those strange areas which you know nary a person has treaded upon due to inaccessibility yet it feels simultaneously public and isolated. I am very interested in these places.
The island in the middle of Spot Pond is called Great Island and during the 19th century it was home to illegal boxing matches and one unsolved murder. I think the murder may been over buried treasure. I hope the pond freezes through this winter so I can walk over and look for that treasure.
